MakeMusic on Tuesday introduced SmartMusic 10.2, a new upgrade to its music learning software. The update is available free to current SmartMusic subscribers. Subscriptions start at $100 per student per year.

SmartMusic is a practice tool for students taking band, orchestra or choir classes. The software lets students plug in a vocal or instrumental microphone and start practicing; it features accompaniments for more than 30,000 titles, exercises to help students master their skills, and the ability to record personal CDs. SmartMusic provides students with detailed feedback, in real-time, describing how the student is doing. It works with woodwind, brass, string and vocals.

New features in SmartMusic 10.2 include support for Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard." the interface has been simplified, as well, and now sports an easier-to-use installer, login, activation, updating and more. A microphone check "wizard" now makes sure that proper microphone levels are enabled. SmartMusic can now record Tuner sessions, and the set-up process has been simplified for SmartMusic Impact, along with better performance and additional Impact "GradeBook" reports.
