Sorenson Media on Monday introduced a new line of Squeeze products for video compression and decoding. Squeeze 5 comes in various packages for Mac OS X and Windows, starting at $199. Upgrades from the previous version are priced starting at $99.

Squeeze 5 is used to encode video for playback on the Web, CD and DVD. You can output content in formats ranging from QuickTime to Flash, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Packages include Squeeze 5, Squeeze 5 Pro (formerly Sorenson Squeeze PowerPack), Squeeze 5 for Flash and Squeeze 5 for Flash Pro.

New to the version 5 releases is the ability to process multiple files simultaneously on Macs that have multiple processors or multi-core processors. Encoding times on such systems have also been reduced. Sorenson says that users can now compress and encode up to 1.5 files on each core.

Also new are improved codecs to provide better video quality. VC-1 encoding is now supported for users creating video for Blu-ray Disc. Quality improvements have also been made to the encoders used for MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and H.264 video, in particular for High Definition (HD) settings. Watermark, Hue-and-saturation and sharpen pre-processing filters have been added, and inverse telecine, video fade and deinterlacing filters have all been improved.

Squeeze 5 also gets overhauled for audio quality. AC-3-compatible 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound audio is now supports, along with support for many VST plug-ins. Audio volume and audio duration filters have been added. BIAS Soundsoap is now included into both Squeeze Pro versions — Soundsoap can be used to remove noise and crackles from audio.

A new feature called Audience Presets bundles preprocessing filters, filter order, encoding settings and output destinations such as FTP servers into a single custom presets. You can also sort presets by format or output target.
