Hothead Games and Penny Arcade on Wednesday announced The Greenhouse, a new distribution platform for independent games.

The Greenhouse, which launched Wednesday as a public beta, is being offered to “showcase a careful selection of games that otherwise may be overlooked in a crowded retail marketplace,” according to the developers. It’s been created to supplement, rather than replace, other online game delivery platforms, and is focused on bringing to light products from independent game makers.

The service is debuting with the new Penny Arcade game, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, due out for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux operating systems. Pricing and specifications for the game were recently posted. A specific date has not yet been published.

To beta-test and load-balance the servers, The Greenhouse is offering a download of the latest podcast from Penny Arcade creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins.
