SoftRAID improves AppleRAID conversion

SoftRAID has announced the release of SoftRAID 3.6.8, an update to its eponymous RAID software for Mac OS X. A free update for registered users, SoftRAID is priced starting at $130.

SoftRAID enables you to create a software-based RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks), a way of using multiple hard disk drives together to provide either faster performance or increased redundancy. Mac OS X’s Disk Utility features its own RAID capability, but SoftRAID claims its product is better, as it has feature’s that Apple’s RAID software does not, such as combining volume types on a disk and changing volume configurations.

SoftRAID 3.6.8 fixes several minor bugs, according to the developer, including a workaround for a Mac OS X problem that could cause a RAID volume to become unmountable. The update also addresses a problem when converting files to Apple’s RAID format.

System requirements call for Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
