As its name implies, the purpose of STM's Cocoon is to provide a semi-rigid envelope of protection around your iPod. (Fortunately, your iPod won't transform itself and fly away when it emerges.) Although the Cocoon is not as crush-proof as the aluminum hardshells from Matias and RhinoSkin, it does offer a few advantages of its own. Clear vinyl "skins" for each size dockable iPod are included; you place the iPod in the appropriate skin and then attach it via Velcro to the inside of the Cocoon. This allows you to open the Cocoon and access the iPod's controls and screen without removing the iPod from the case, much like a "flipcover" case. (It also allows you to quickly remove the iPod from the Cocoon for full access to the dock connector port.) Although the Cocoon is significantly bulkier than the aforementioned metal cases, its bigger interior can accommodate your earbuds and a few other small items (cash, ID, etc.).--Dan Frakes
