Apple's second-generation iPod nanos may be tougher than their predecessors, but that doesn't mean they don't need care and protection. If you're concerned about keeping your 2G nano as pristine as the day it was unboxed, Speck Products's ToughSkin ought to satisfy.

From its angular grooves to its thick silicone edges, the ToughSkin is all about business. The top and bottom of the skin are open, so you can slide your nano in from either direction, as well as access its hold switch, dock-connector port, and headphone jack with no problem. That leaves the opening for the screen and the Click Wheel. Although the Click Wheel is unprotected (and therefore easily accessible), it's recessed a bit to help it avoid blows; the screen features a hard, clear acrylic protector that slides easily into place and is held there by a rubberized edge.

The back of the ToughSkin has a small plastic post to which you can attach a removable, swiveling belt clip. The clip itself is fairly bulky; given that the case itself is on the large side, this means that you've substantially increased the heft of the svelte nano when you use both the case and the belt clip. Fortunately, not only is the belt clip removable, but so is the plastic post, meaning that you can slim down the whole thing without resorting to pesky dieting.

Besides the lack of Click Wheel protection, my only concern for the nano is that the entirety of the top and bottom of the iPod are exposed, unlike in the ToughSkin's big brother for the 5G iPod (with video); the latter keeps the openings small and localized to the controls themselves.

Still, these are small concerns for a case as resilient as this one. If extra bulk and an exposed Click Wheel are of little concern to you, then the ToughSkin ought to fulfill your needs quite nicely.
