YouTube fans may want to take a look at Xnet Communications’s iTuber, a Mac app which provides drag-and-drop support for YouTube uploads and downloads, and creates a single-window interface to the entire YouTube experience.

Standard YouTube menus are offered on the left side of the interface, including favorites, playlists, subscriptions, and the “most popular” list so you can see which cute kitten video is currently captivating the world. Videos are shown on the right in icon or list layout, and an in-window viewer plays on the bottom left. Downloaded movies are stored in a new iTuber folder in your Movies folder.

Note that upon launching iTuber, it will ask for your YouTube login and password—for many users, this is identical to their Gmail username and password, which may make them think twice. If you opt not to enter the credentials, clicking on any of the menu options that require you to login will display an error message—and not a very pretty one at that.

The interface also takes a bit of getting used to: despite an attempt to evoke the feel of iTunes, it’s more reminiscent of Panic’s retired Audion. Figuring out how to do things requires some exploration, as there are no read me files or Help menus. (Hint: download videos by dragging them to your “Local Library” entry. Very easy once you figure it out—which, in my case, was after right-clicking on everything.)

iTuber 1.2—apparently the first public release of the software—requires OS X 10.5 or higher, and costs $20. A free 30-day trial download is also available. Now if you’ll excuse me, having watched the same video twelve times while writing this, I have to go buy some Old Spice.
