Sharing files between employees and clients is a challenge for virtually every business, big or small. FTP is too Old World and technical, you get what you (don’t) pay for with most free services, and don’t even get me started on e-mail. Smith Micro Software—a company that boasts 20 years of experience in file compression and encryption—is entering the online file sharing foray with SendStuffNow, its Web-based “secure file delivery service.”

SendStuffNow has a simple goal of making the file sharing process both easy and secure, not to mention a value proposition to business and enterprise users. It's bringing a unique approach to territory currently occupied by the likes of YouSendItDroplr, and Dropbox. You upload a file to SendStuffNow, then use its sharing tools to send links for those files to your recipients. All correspondence between you, your recipients, and SendStuffNow’s servers is SSL encrypted with an RSA 2048 bit key. Files on SendStuffNow’s servers are also encrypted with AES 256 bit keys, so you can go ahead and tell your boss that things are pretty much locked down.

A headlining feature of SendStuffNow is its file delivery management. You can track file downloads, get notified when recipients completes their downloads, and revoke access to a file at any time. In addition to being quite accessible as a Web service via modern browsers on any platform, SendStuffNow also has management apps coming for iPhone and iPad (they should be out by the end of this week or the next). Android and BlackBerry clients should arrive by the end of summer, too.

You can sign up for a free SendStuffNow account to test the service with files up to 1GB in size. You will also have access to most of the service’s features, including the ability to import contacts from Google or Outlook to streamline the sharing process. Getting into paid territory, Premium accounts start at $120 per year, which grants access to phone support and sharing files up to 2GB in size. Pro accounts with access to more storage space and bandwidth are $180, and multi-seat accounts start at $1000 per year.
