Flipboard, the “personal social magazine” for reading Twitter and Facebook on an iPad, has been updated to answer a number of user requests and complaints from its initial launch.

This seemingly minor version 1.0.2 update brings a number of user-requested features, including the ability to add up to 21 sections to Flipboard (up from the launch limit of just nine), offline browsing, and automatic refreshing when new content is ready or when you get close to the last page of a section.

Page layouts are smarter, optimizing space for posts that do not contain any media or links to leave more room for posts that do. You can now retweet with a comment in addition to Twitter’s official retweet feature, and launch time should be much faster.

If you haven't yet had the pleasure, Flipboard turns the act of reading Twitter and Facebook into a highly visual experience. It crawls through the photos and links your friends share, then lays them out like a magazine with pages that you flip through. Pictures and videos are displayed in-line, and Flipboard includes previews of linked article text and any accompanying photos. You can add different sections to your Flipboard, based on any Twitter lists you’ve created or a group of built-in feeds centered around topics like tech, photography, travel, and general news.

When Flipboard launched in July, the company's servers (which pre-fetch your Twitter and Facebook streams in order to crawl for content and build the layout you see on your iPad) were overwhelmed for weeks, slowing the pace at which new users could be accepted. Flipboard seems to have successfully balanced the load by now, and new users can sign up immediately after downloading the app to their iPads.

Flipboard 1.0.2 is available now for free in the App Store. It requires an iPad running iOS 3.2 or later.
