Remember back at the original iPhone launch when Steve Jobs said “and boy, have we patented it”? Yeah, turns out it wasn’t just a good line. Also, Apple tips would-be musicians on how not to be a jerk in their Ping profiles, and the Financial Times is living up to its name. Allow me to submit exhibit A: the remainders for Tuesday, October 12, 2010.

Apple wins three colossal multi-touch related patents (Patently Apple)

Apple is the proud bearer of three new multi-touch patents, including such gems as “Ellipse fitting for multi-touch surfaces.” The real big one, though, is probably “Portable electronic device with multi-touch input,” which you might as well call the patent that launched a thousand lawsuits.

Apple publishes Ping tips for artists (9 to 5 Mac)

Are you an indie artist looking to broaden your exposure by using Apple’s Ping social networking service? Here are some tips for you, then, courtesy Cupertino: no pornography, hate speech, racism, nudity, or references to/depictions of drug use in your profile. Also, Apple recommends “you don’t pick the same album multiple times, and that you don’t pick only your own music.” Yeah, don’t be that guy. Nobody likes that guy.

Financial Times app brings in £1m (Guardian)

So, the Financial Times’s iPad app is no slouch: with over 400,000 downloads, it accounts for more than 10 percent of the paper’s new digital subscriptions, and has generated roughly $1.5 million in advertising revenue. Just answer me this: when do I get to throw the “Apple saved publishing!” surprise party I've been planning for the last ten months?
