By now you should know the drill. If “Iconfactory” and “new iPhone game” are involved in a headline, you should probably just go get it.
Astronut is a new iPhone game from Iconfactory, the same folks who previously attempted to vanquish your free time with games like Frenzic and Ramp Champ. This time around you are indeed an astronaut, exploring the galaxy by hopping from planet to planet, collecting hearts and star shards, and attempting to avoid the aliens who aren’t too keen on your existence.
The game and its first four levels are available for free, including full support for Apple’s Game Center. If you're satisfied with the gameplay, you can purchase the remaining 20 levels for $2 from within the app.
Astronut is an addictive, fast-paced puzzle game with plenty of variety to keep you interested. Game controls are pretty simple—just a jump button and a turbo-boost button. You pingpong Jacques the astronaut across various spinning worlds with different traits and spin rates. Long jumps that use the gravity of planets to slingshot you forward are especially rewarded. Check out Iconfactory’s teaser trailer for an idea of the gameplay.
I downloaded the game last night when Iconfactory released it, which may or may not be why I'm only posting this story now. Astronut is a whole lot of clever, well-designed fun.
Astronut is available now in the App Store and requires an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later.
