Developers of a new personal journaling app for the Mac are promising to restore the “pen and paper feeling” to the act of writing on your computer.

Per Se 1.0 was launched on Monday by developer Sprouted. The focus is on creating a digital version of the old Moleskine journals; users can pick from three themes for the overall look, then customize fonts and colors. Per Se includes a full-screen mode so you can record your thoughts or write poetry in rich text format without giving into the distraction of Facebook or Twitter. (Watch Sprouted's introductory video for a guide to the app.)

While Sprouted touts a focus on writing, Per Se does include multimedia elements, including support for audio and video entries, and the ability to import photos directly from your Mac's iSight camera. The app also features several organizing tools, including tags, bookmarks, and a calendar that tracks the days you write.

Per Se is compatible with computers running Mac OS X 10.6 or later. You can download a free demo version—with a limit of 20 entries—or buy the app for $20.
