Let’s say that rock concert everyone’s been raving about becomes available online. You go to the Web to watch it through your QuickTime Player. After a few minutes, the show stops. Pay a fee, and you can see the rest.
Welcome to the world of on-demand QuickTime content, brought to you by SealedMedia (415/394-9999,
). The company makes downloadable digital-rights-management software that lets Web publishers sell their online content to credit card-carrying surfers. And its product will be available as a plug-in for QuickTime 5.
“(Web sites will) run a movie for ten minutes and then they’ll scramble it,” says Alan D. Mutter, president and CEO of SealedMedia. “If you like it and get hooked, you can buy it and watch it.”
The plug-in lets you buy content on a view-only or a permanent basis. “You download it once, and it’s permanently plugged into your QuickTime Player,” Mutter says.
