Two products from Adobe (800/833-6687, www.adobe.com ): After Effects 5.0 has new 3-D tools, a parenting tool to define relationships between objects, improved masking, and new plug-ins. The standard edition sells for $649 and upgrades are $199. Acrobat 5.0 adds tools that let you create live electronic PDF forms on the Web, save PDF files in Rich Text Format, and add comments and digitally sign PDF documents within a Web browser. The electronic document software has enhanced password protection and security controls. Acrobat sells for $249; you can upgrade for $99.

The hiring of Newer Technologies engineers by Sonnet Technologies (949/587-3500, www.sonnettech.com ): The maker of upgrade cards says it has hired “all key engineering personnel” from Newer, which filed for bankruptcy in January. The move doubles Sonnet’s engineering and development team.
The purchase of router maker Netopia by Proxim (800/229-1630, www.proxim.com ): The wireless-networking hardware maker will pay $223 million for Netopia, whose Mac products include Timbuktu remote-control software and the netOctopus network management program.
