If you’re looking for applications for your iPod beyond just playing music and storing files, you may be interested in a demonstration that ProVUE Development plans to make at next week’s Macworld Expo. The database developers will be showing off the Panorama iPod Organizer, software that enables you to store important information on your iPod which you can then retrieve by using the iPod’s jog wheel.
At next week’s Macworld Expo, database developers ProVUE Development plan to demonstrate its new Panorama Pod Organizer. The Panorama iPod Organizer enables you to store and access phone number, e-mail addresses, flight numbers, appointment times and other data on your iPod.
Data can be entered and edited in the Panorama iPod Organizer itself or can be imported from other database or contact manager software, according to the developers. You can also customize information categories. Information is accessible the same way that you navigate iPod music files — all of the categories you’ve named are visible in the Artists menu of the iPod.
Panorama iPod Organizer doesn’t require any special software to be installed on the iPod. Instead, the cleverly designed utility simply exports the data as tiny MP3 files that are compatible with iTunes (the audio tracks themselves are silent). The iPod is synced to the Mac, all of the contact info is automatically transferred to the iPod. Worried about Panorama iPod Organizer gobbling up too much storage space on your iPod? Fear not — ProVUE said that 1,000 contacts will use less than 0.1 percent of the space on the iPod’s hard disk drive.
If you’re already a user of ProVUE’s Panorama database application, you get a special bonus: the Panorama iPod Organizer can take any Panorama database and convert it into a source for iPod data. Any data that can fit on the iPod screen can be downloaded.
Expect the Panorama iPod Organizer to be released in late January 2002 for an introductory price of US$19.95. More details are available from the Web site.
