Mac game publisher MacSoft today confirmed that they’re shipping Sid Meier’s Civilization III, the latest version in the popular strategy game franchise. Copies of the game are expected to arrive on store shelves this week.
Civilization III is the latest edition of the popular turn based empire-building strategy game in which your goal is to raise a civilization through the management of trade, diplomacy, culture development and military strategy. Developed originally for the PC by Firaxis Games, Civ III was developed for the Mac by Westlake Interactive.
The game runs natively in “Classic” Mac OS and Mac OS X. MacSoft production coordinator Nate Birkholz explained to MacCentral that the Mac OS X version of Civ III uses Mac OS X’s Quartz graphics engine for screen rendering.
MacSoft first announced plans to bring Civilization III to the Macintosh platform during last May’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Initially anticipated for release later this quarter, MacSoft instead managed to get the game onto store shelves in time for this week’s Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Calif.
System requirements for Sid Meier’s Civilization III call for Mac OS 8.6 or higher, including Mac OS X 10.0.4 or higher. 64MB RAM are required to run the game in Classic Mac OS, 128MB are needed for Mac OS X. 500MB hard disk space is also required.
Sid Meier’s Civilization III is available through Mac software retailers for a suggested retail price of US$49.99.
