Adobe Systems Inc. today announced a new pricing and distribution scheme for Content Server 2.1, the company’s digital rights management software. The latest version allows up to four downloads per purchase and no per-transaction fees.
Content Server 2.1 is Adobe’s digital rights management software for content based on the company’s Portable Document Format (PDF). Using Content Server, content creators can electronically distribute their material using eBook-savvy software like Adobe’s own InDesign 2.0 and FrameMaker. Content can be encrypted and distributed accordingly. Users can view the content on Macs, PCs, and handheld devices without incurring extra fees.
The new pricing scheme uses a two-tier scale. Corporations or publishers who want to distribute a specific numbers of documents to their employees or customers use the tier-one scale; Tier-two provides licensing better suited to application service providers (ASPs) and value-added resellers (VARs) who want to distribute an unlimited number of titles to a specific number of destination sites.
Adobe director of eBooks James Alexander explained that the new scheme has been created to enable resellers to deploy a scaleable solution to new customers.
“As companies distribute more and more sensitive information electronically, the need to manage content through a [Digital Rights Management] system has never been greater,” said Alexander.
Tier one incurs a one-time fee of US$5,000 for one Content Server destination site that’s capable of hosting up to 250 titles. Expansion packs are available that add up to 500 titles for $1,000.
Tier two licensing costs $10,000 for the Content Server linked to one destination site, hosting an unlimited number of titles. If you want to add destination sites, you can do so for $1,500 a pop.
