For the first time, a PlexWriter drive features a black CD-holder tray, which the company’s lab tests found reduces C1 error rates, according to Howard Wing, Plexor’s vice president of sales and marketing. Optimized PCB circuits near the power supply help decrease noise and provide clean power to the drive, improving both jitter and deviation levels, he added. A new diagnostic function helps users determine whether write errors are caused by the drive, the media or the system.
The PlexWriter 40/12/40A sports BURN-Proof technology that’s designed to prevent buffer underrun errors, so users can multi-task by sending email or surfing the Web while recording a high-quality CD. It also has PoweRec-II media-writing technology that, according to Plextor, “guarantees recording results across a broad base of certified media.” For instance, you can calibrate the drive to each media disc using “Zone-CLV servo positioning.”
The drive, which has a suggested retail price of US$209, features a 4MB data buffer and Digital Audio Extraction rates to a maximum of 40X. Burst data transfer rates are 16.6 MB/sec (PIO Mode 4/DMA Mode 2) or 33.3 MB/sec (UDMA Mode 2). The drive also supports a variety of writing modes, including Track-at-Once, Disc-at-Once, Session-at-Once, Multisession, and variable/fixed packet writing.
