Pacific Image Electronics, which specializes in desktop color imaging products, has rolled out the PrimeFilm 3600PRO, a new film scanner that operates at 3600dpi optical resolution and is capable of producing a digital image of approximately 17.8 million pixels (5100 x 3445).
The US$499 PrimeFilm 3600PRO can be connected by either FireWire or USB port to any Mac running Mac OS version 8.6 or later (a Mac OS X driver is in the works). The film scanner can record the full range of brightness, from absolute black darkness (0.0) to full white brightness (4.0). Plus, it’s equipped with an automatic film loader that takes filmstrips or un-cut roll films without having to use film holders.
The PrimeFilm 3600PRO is targeted to graphic artists, professional or serious amateur photographers and photo-enthusiasts. It works with Adobe Photoshop and other popular image editors. Photoshop Elements comes bundled with the scanner.
