Pliris has announced the release of Firewalk X 2, the latest version of its Mac OS X firewall software.
The new version sports the ability to block specific applications from using the network, as well as an real-time, interactive alerts. Administrators can configure application blocking based on the specific user or IP address, including subnets.
Pliris noted that firewall rules can apply to IP address and ports (both destination and source), subnets, port ranges, incoming and outgoing traffic, and specific devices as well. Each firewall and application rule can optionally be logged and generate an alert.
With ipfw built into Mac OS X, is Firewalk just a graphical user interface for the built-in software? No way, Pliris explained. Firewalk isn’t dependent on any underlying BSD tools in Mac OS X — although it is completely compatible. The software can also switch rule settings when the user changes locations, automatically.
Firewalk X 2 costs US$49.99, and is a free upgrade for Firewalk X 1.x licensees.
