Intermec Technologies Corp. and Elan Digital Systems announced today a partnership that will yield new wireless LAN options for desktop computer users, including Mac users.
The Elan P111 adapter is a single rear slot universal PCI to PCMCIA adapter. It fits in computers that sport PCI expansion slots, including Macs, and carries a retail price of US$99. The device be combined with Intermec’s MobileLAN product to help create a wireless computer network.
What separates the P111 from other PCI-based wireless networking expansion cards is the product’s purported flexibility. The P111 works with multiple protocols including 802.11b (the same as Apple’s AirPort products), 802.11a and 802.11g, so users can change the network interface depending on the level of flexibility needed. For now, Elan’s P111 card supports Mac OS 9, specifically.
Intermec’s MobileLAN products include the 2102, 2100 Industrial and 2101 enterprise access points, as well as a variety of other products. The company manufactures a complete suite of products designed for wireless networking. Features include integrated IP tunneling.
