Brigadoon Software, a provider of personal computer tracking and security software, is now shipping a new security software application called PC PhoneHome that, despite the name, also tracks and locates missing Macs.

“The innovative crime fighting products help protect personal computers from theft,” company spokesperson Belinda Banks told MacCentral. “PC PhoneHome Lite is a freeware version distributed as a public service to provide the public at large. PC PhoneHome Pro is the paid version of the program sold for US$29.99 — and which cannot be removed even by the most techie thief.”
If your Mac is lost or stolen, the security software sends a stealth signal containing the computer’s exact coordinates to a pre-determined e-mail address set by the customer. The customer then notifies the local police of the computer’s location. With the computer properly configured, PC PhoneHome Pro can survive a thief’s attempt to erase it by reformatting the hard drive.
“The laptop or computer can’t tell it’s been stolen; only the owner can,” Banks said. “The software itself will continue to send you, the owner, an e-mail (at the e-mail address you place during installation) when a different STMP/ISP is acknowledged. The owner can ignore these e-mails until their computer/laptop is stolen.”
PC PhoneHome stays resident and continues to “phone home” the next time your Mac makes an Internet connection. PC PhoneHome Lite, unlike the professional version, will not withstand a reformatting of the hard drive.
PC PhoneHome is compatible with Mac OS and Windows operating systems. PC PhoneHome Lite is available for download.
