The consulting-programming team at Eridanus has updated Baker, their newsgroup download utility for the traditional Mac operating system and Mac OS X, to version 1.5.4. This release fixes several performance bugs and introduces a new feature that alerts you when a new version is available, according to Mike Trivisonno of Eridanus.

“Baker Classic registration keys will also work with Baker for OS X, so when you do upgrade to Apple’s latest operating system, you can use Baker for OS X right away,” he said. “We didn’t want to penalize our users for moving up to OS X.”
Though they’ve just released an update of Baker, Eridanus is also hard at work on version 2.0. Trivisonno said the upcoming version will present a streamlined interface, fully threaded decoding of files, and other enhancements.
“We are also integrating technology from our popular multimedia player, Archer,” he added.
Meanwhile, Baker 1.5.4 is a free upgrade to current owners. Unregistered versions of the application — which costs US$30 — are fully functional, but will occasionally display reminders to register. Baker, Baker Classic, and Archer can be downloaded from the Eridanus Web site.
