TechCache, which costs US$19.95, enables the backside cache on most Newer Technology G3 and G4 processor upgrades under Mac OS X, something that wasn’t previously possible, according to Terry Unrein of TechnoWarehouse. TechMeasure, which is free, is a universal application that reports processor card statistics and can be used by any Power Mac under Mac OS X: stock or, upgraded with any G3 or G4 CPU (central processing unit) card.
“Prior to the release of TechCache, Newer Technology MAXpowr G3 and G4 processor upgrade customers could install and use Mac OS X; however the backside cache was not enabled, reducing performance,” Unrein said. “TechCache ensures that MAXpowr users realize the full performance potential of their upgraded Power Mac(s).”
Power Mac 7300-9600 users who want to install Mac OS X can still use the freely available XPostFacto software from OWC that’s also available for download.
TechMeasure reports system performance information from CPU type and speed to cache size and speed to bus speed. It is this information that allows users to know that their system is performing at maximum speed. Unless the backside cache is enabled using TechCache, TechMeasure can’t report its speed, Unrein said.
TechCache runs on most MAXpowr G3 and G4 upgrades, including “PCI” and ZIF upgrades, except MAXpowr G3 L2 and MAXpowr G3 PDS. Check the TechnoWarehouse Web site for a complete list of supported MAXpowr upgrades.
