If you’re a fan of classic arcade games and you’re hankering for some old-school fun, you absolutely have to give
Freeverse Software’s Winguts a try. In fact, it’s the latest game to get the QuickTime game trailer treatment on
Apple’s Games site.
The game puts you in the cockpit of a time-traveling futuristic jet fighter to do battle with the evil (and quite mad) Baron von Schtopwatch, who has sent squadron after squadron of robot-controlled planes to battle you in a supreme fight to take over the world.
You’ll travel throughout history, going from balsa wood and paper biplanes up to the modern age of high-speed jet fighters, and beyond, as you fight to save the world from the wise-cracking Baron. You have your own team to help you, including Freeverse’s plucky mascot Jen and a handy refueling tanker. As you navigate the skies, you can rescue other parachuting pilots or pick up wayward powerups to regenerate your shields, improve your weapons stash or add to your fuel.
Wingnuts unquestionably draws its inspiration from classics like Taito’s 1982 coin-op arcade hit Time Pilot, but it’s thoroughly updated for today’s Macs. The game features OpenGL-rendered graphics, a terrific soundtrack and smooth gameplay. It even sports game controller support for Mac OS X. So don’t wait — watch the QuickTime trailer on Apple’s Web site, then visit Freeverse and download the demo.
