Companion Engineering & Design today announced Intuem. Intuem is a MIDI-based music authoring application for Mac OS X that has been developed specifically for education and home use.

Intuem uses a single window interface to display the composition you’re working on with each track shown in one of three styles: Micro, which gives you an overview; standard musical notation; and Mega, a “piano-roll” style which the developer said is useful for editing. Styles can be switched per track and tracks can be layered together.
Intuem supports Aqua with translucent palettes that feature movable controls. Music notation is rendered using a new custom font that’s anti-aliased using Quartz for enhanced clarity and performance.
The software supports OS X’s built in MIDI capabilities and will work with any MIDI keyboard or sound module, when used with a compatible MIDI interface that has OS X drivers available. Companion Engineering & Design said that such products are already available from RolandEdirol, Midiman and Evolution. QuickTime Musical Instruments plus DLS and SoundFont2 files are supported as well.
Intuem can import and export music as standard MIDI files and can print out music in standard manuscript format. RMID file input is also included.
Intuem is available for purchase now for US$129. A demo version is also available for download.
