Pageflex — a company that develops, markets and supports “marketing on demand” software and related technology — has added .EDIT (pronounced “DOT EDIT”), a real-time, browser-based application for the design and editing of desktop publishing documents, to its publishing product line.
The app offers the features of Pageflex’s XML-based NuDoc composition engine with Java applet technologies to deliver documents to Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers for Mac and PC systems. NuDoc treats a document as an object, and is a reusable building block for document processing applications.
With .EDIT, companies can create Web sites with a library of document templates and allow any authorized Web site visitor to create customized versions of these documents that contain full-featured typography and graphic design elements, according to Charles Ying, CEO of Pageflex.
“.EDIT enables companies to offer document editing capabilities to customers, employees, marketing partners, and dealers or franchise owners — all through their standard Web site and without requiring the use of any plug-ins,” he said. “A company deploying .EDIT on its Web site can create templates that allow it to maintain its brand/corporate identity by using approved fonts, design elements, and images.”
Companies choose the sub-set of features accessible by the end user and can vary the features made available by type of user and level of desktop publishing knowledge. .EDIT can be used throughout the entire document creation process, including template creation and editing, free-form editing of document elements (including text and object styling), variable data input via Web forms, document previewing, PDF proofing and final output.
The document applet can display multiple-page documents, various zoom page controls and scroll bars. .EDIT’s editing features include text input, text and object styling, image placement and resizing, creating or modifying objects and moving objects on or across pages. The app is available as an add-on to Pageflex Mpower, the company’s dynamic composition software.
Pageflex Mpower is an enterprise software solution for designing and producing Web-driven marketing communications. It, too, is Web based and Mac compatible.
Demos of all these products are available at the Pageflex Web site, although you apparently have to contact the company for pricing info.
