United Developers subsidiary MacPlay today announced plans to publish a Mac version of Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix. Soldier of Fortune II is based on the popular military enthusiast magazine. It’s a gritty and realistic action game that depicts modern combat.

The game was originally developed by Raven Software and published for the PC by Activision. Rated M for Mature, the game is a first person shooter that puts you in the role of John Mullins, a military consultant working for a top-secret covert operations group called The Shop. In your role you’ll have to make use of stealth and strategy as you go on a variety of different missions like hostage rescue, reconnaissance and search-and-destroy missions.

Soldier of Fortune II utilizes a modified version of Id Software’s Quake III Arena graphics engine, which features GHOUL II damage modeling technology and the TORR terrain system. The game sports detailed skeletal animation system that provides lifelike character movements and per-pixel hit locations, providing ultra realistic action, according to MacPlay. Users can even man entrenched guns and ride in vehicles.

In addition to a huge single player campaign, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix also features a “random mission” generator that creates literally millions of permutations of single and multiplayer maps on the fly. The game’s multiplayer mode also sports nine professionally designed maps, more than 100 model and skin combinations and four different game modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Elimination and Infiltration.

“With a rich history in action games and first person shooters, MacPlay understands exactly what the gamer wants … and Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix delivers the most powerful gaming experience yet,” said MacPlay president Mark Cottam.
Calling his company’s new game “poised to become the next big gaming phenomenon,” Raven vice president Brian Raffel added, “PC gamers are getting a little bit of a head start over their Mac peers, but it won’t be long before both camps are battling it out in lush Columbian jungles and Siberian wastelands.”
MacPlay plans to release Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix in the early summer. It’s coming for Mac OS X.
