Hardcore fans of MacSoft’s first person shooter Unreal Tournament know that you can add on a variety of third-party creations called “mods.” Such add-ons can simply provide more maps or modified weapons, but sometimes the mods can recreate the game all together. That’s the case with one popular mod called Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror.
Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror is a realistic mod for UT that enables players to take the role of covert operatives on counter terrorism missions with real-life weapons and real-life scenarios. “Basically, Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror is a lot like an action movie, but much more detailed,” said the developers.
Most mods for UT and other shooters end up as free downloads on the Web, but Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror is actually available as an commercial, boxed product available from retailers, with a limited version available for download from the Web. Up until now, official Macintosh support for Tactical Ops has been non-existent, but that appears to be changing according to a recent bulletin board post by developer Kamehan Studios’ lead programmer Laurent “Shag” Delayen, as reported by MacGamer.com.
“I’ve just received a couple days ago the “go” from Infogrames to release a Mac and Linux version,” said Delayen. “I think we’ll wait next patch though to release everything.”
Although Delayen did not offer any further details, this presumably means that Mac users will be able to go to the store, buy a copy of Tactical Ops, and download an installer from the official Web site which will then simplify the process of adding Tactical Ops to their Unreal Tournament installation.
