Mac game developer and publisher Freeverse Software today announced that it has made available the futuristic 3D racing game Wipeout 2097 available in the U.S.
Originally developed by Coderus and published by UK-based Virtual Publishing Ltd., Wipeout 2097 has been available up until now only as an import through UK-based Softline. Freeverse announced in late April that it had reached an agreement with Virtual Publishing Ltd. to bring the game to the United States, and it’s finally made good on its promise.
Wipeout 2097 was also called Wipeout XL when it was first released for the PlayStation video game console several years ago. The first of many follow-up titles to one of the most memorable racing franchises of the 1990’s, Wipeout XL puts players behind the controls of one of several different futuristic racing vehicles which hover on a variety of different tracks. Players collect powerups like weapons and shields as they seek to get the best time.
Unlike the PlayStation version, Wipeout 2097’s Mac variant features online multiplayer support. It also runs natively in Mac OS X, and in its most recent update, supports game controllers in OS X as well — making it possible to replicate that PlayStation experience on your Mac.
Freeverse sells Wipeout 2097 straight from its own Web site store for US$29.95. And if you want to get your hands on it before you buy it and you’ll be in New York next week, make sure to pay Freeverse a visit at Macworld Conference & Expo — they’re in booth 1809, in the Games area.
