Newer Technology has announced faster MAXpowr G4 ZIF upgrades for Power Mac G3 models. The company has also announced a G4 upgrade for “Wallstreet” and “Lombard”-era PowerBook G3s.
The MAXpowr G4 upgrades come in 533MHz and 500MHz flavors, both installable on beige Power Mac G3s and “blue and white” models. Both upgrades feature 1MB of backside cache running at half the speed of the CPU. The 533MHz model features a 266MHz cache bus while the 500MHz model uses a 250MHz cache bus. Prices start at US$299.
Newer also announced the NUpowr G4 upgrade for two models of PowerBook G3, running at 500MHz. Like Newer’s recently announced upgrade for “Pismo”-model PowerBook G3s, the NUpowr G4 requires users to send in their laptops to Newer Technology to perform the upgrade on the stock CPU card. Newer then removes the existing CPU card, adds, the G4 processor, reinstalls and tests the new unit, and ships it back. The company said the process takes about two weeks from start to finish, via standard UPS 2-Day Shipping. Customers willing to pay extra freight costs can have some time off their upgrade.
Wallstreet PowerBook G3 owners have another option, as well. For 233MHz PowerBook G3 owners whose units do not have Level 2 cache on board, Newer can optionally add the G4 card and 1MB of Level 2 cache (for an added price). The cache runs at 250MHz (a 2:1 ratio to the CPU clock speed).
The Nupowr G4 costs $350. The upgrade card runs the original Mac OS that shipped with the PowerBook and Mac OS X is supported too. The product is covered by a two year warranty.
