In Georgia there’s an annual “tax holiday” in which certain items, including computers, are exempt from sales tax. In covering the event, the Atlanta Journal Constitution went to the new Apple retail store in Atlanta.
At the Apple computer store at Lenox Square, customers were lined up 50 deep as they waited to buy Macs, an Aug. 3 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article reported. At least one person in line was a Mac-convert named Loretta Vitale.
“I’m switching,” she told the Journal-Constitution. “I have a brand new PC at home, but I’m taking it back. I’ve had problems with viruses … I’ve been waiting 15 minutes, and I haven’t moved. I came in Thursday to reserve my Mac, but I didn’t expect it to be like this.”
The tax-free period ran from 12:01 am Friday through the end of the shopping day on Saturday. School supplies (up to $20 per item), shoes and apparel (up to $100 per item) were among the tax exempt items, but computers seemed to be the hot ticket Friday, the newspaper reported.
