Mac memory and storage reseller Trans Intl has announced the online availability of a new Toshiba 2.5-inch hard disk that’s 9.5 mm thick. It’s available in both internal and external (FireWire-equipped) configurations starting at US$249.
The new drive has a 5400RPM mechanism and sports the largest cache size available in its form factor — 16MB. That enables it to achieve system-level performance up to 12 percent faster than 4200RPM drives limited to 2MB cache buffers, according to Trans Intl. It also features a fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor, which works quieter than other mechanisms, and features an ATA-5 compliant interface capable of supporting data transfer speeds up to 100MB/sec.
Trans Intl claims the new drive is large and fast enough for portable video recording and editing, and sports lower power consumption than 3.5-inch hard disk drives. It’s available in a 40GB capacity, and can also be ordered in an external FireWire configuration that uses the Oxford Semiconductor Oxford 911 bridge chip.
