SmartDisk Corp. has an upcoming line of portable, external, USB 2.0 hard drives in 80GB and 120GB sizes. You can use them with your Mac, though you’ll only get USB 1.1 speeds as Apple doesn’t offer USB 2.0 system support (unless you’ve added a third-party USB 2.0 expansion card to your OS X system).
The drives sport a 3.5-inch mechanism and an aluminum alloy case that purportedly provides heat dissipation without fan noise. The drives can be oriented either upright or horizontally.
The suggested retail price for the 80GB drive is US$219.99; the 120GB model is $299.99. The drives are due in late September.
