today announced the release of Maya 4.5, the latest major release of their industrial-strength 3D design and animation software. This initial release is for Windows, IRIX and Linux, but the Mac OS X version is very close behind — Maya Complete 4.5 for Mac OS X ships on September 23.

Alias|Wavefront said that Maya 4.5 sports the biggest number of API enhancements since the first version was released. Most importantly for Mac users, Maya Complete 4.5 for Mac OS X gains version parity with its counterparts — providing Mac access to all the new features in Maya Complete 4.0 and 4.5 inclusive. That also means that Maya users can exchange files regardless of platform and be assured that they’ll work.
Users gain a full range of advanced NURBS and subdivision surface tools, including the ability to convert from subdivision surfaces or polygons to NURBS. Users can also build high-resolution geometries with a low-res polygon proxy cage thanks to the addition of Smooth Proxy tools.
More APIs have been released, and extensions have been introduced to file referencing, thus allowing additional API access.
Look for Maya Complete 4.5 for US$1,999. Upgrades cost $699.
