If you’ve been having trouble getting your printer to work with your Jaguar-equipped Mac, you might want to give Gimp-Print a try. Gimp-Print 4.2.2 is now available for Mac OS X 10.2, “Jaguar,” and it’s available as a standard Mac OS X installer package.
Gimp-Print is an open-source printer driver designed to support Epson, Canon, Lexmark and Hewlett-Packard brand printers. It works hand in hand with CUPS, the printer technology favored by Mac OS X 10.2. Its developers indicate that Gimp-Print supports many printers that are otherwise not supported in Mac OS X — “almost every Epson inkjet,” for example. The developers also claim that Gimp-Print drivers “often provide superior results” when compared to vendor-made drivers.
Gimp-Print works with any supported printer via USB, TCP/IP and SAMA. Since it requires CUPS to work, Gimp-Print needs Mac OS X 10.2 or later. And because it’s open-source, there’s no charge.
