Cambridge, Mass.-based Riverdeep Inc. has announced the release of new educational software for kids — Reader Rabbit Learn to Read with Phonics 1st & 2nd Grade. The company is promoting the release as a new expansion to the enormously popular Reader Rabbit product line, which has sold more than 25 million copies to date.

Built on the same approach utilized by the Reader Rabbit Learn to Read with Phonics Preschool & Kindergarten title, the new 1st & 2nd Grade title is available now on hybrid CD-ROM for Windows and Macintosh for about $25. And it runs natively on Mac OS X.
Featuring animated characters that present phonics concepts like word families and compound words, the new educational title provides instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness, combined with skill-building activities and interactive storybooks. The idea is to provide kids with what they need to develop and practice essential reading skills.
Storybooks reinforce the use of words presented in each skill-building activities; stories are presented in the form of newspaper articles, comic strips, poems and journal entries. Kids can either have the storybook read to them dramatically by the characters in the adventure or they can do it themselves, recording their own voices along the way.
And for teachers interested in integrating Reader Rabbit into their curriculum, Riverdeep will be introducing later this year an Enhanced Educator Version (EEV) that includes whole class progress tracking, printable assessment tests, and lots more.
