Zipwise, a provider of U.S. Postal Service zip code data to the Mac corporate and developer community, has released its Zipwise zip code database for Mac and Windows systems.

Zipwise offers the necessary data (zip code, latitude, longitude, country, city, state, and time zone) for performing proximity searches using zip code latitudes and longitudes. It includes data in formats including Excel (.xls), text file (.txt), and FileMaker Pro (.fp5). This capability lets a company assign sales reps to territories, or locate the nearest store to a customer, using true geographic data, said Brian Dunning, chief technology officer at Zipwise.
The Zipwise zip code database also includes an instructive document, “Calculating Distance,” which describes the calculations and methodology behind calculating the distance between zip codes. A live, online demo is available on the Zipwise Web site; the cost is US$99. The Zipwise 2002 Edition info for over 49,000 current US zip codes.
In addition to the database, Zipwise is also offering two other new products, ZipCodes FM and Weblet ZipCodes, which provide the zip code searching functionality to FileMaker Pro databases, and CDML and Lasso powered Web sites.
