Apple subsidiary Emagic today released Logic Platinum 5.4 for Mac OS X, an updated version of its premiere music composition and audio production system. It’s the first version to feature support for Audio Units, a Mac OS X standard for handling third-party Digital Signal Processing (DSP) plug-ins.

Logic Platinum 5.4 supports all Emagic software instruments and plug-ins, as well. Emagic makes the Emagic Audio Units Developer Kit, which it said can be used by third-party companies to port existing software instruments and plug-ins to support Audio Units as well. Audio Units improve handling of multiple audio streams and provide the framework for compatibility with other Mac OS X applications. Logic Platinum 5.4 for Mac OS X is available as a free download for all registered Logic Platinum 5 users.
In late June 2002 Apple acquired Emagic, which now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary. Apple raised a furor in the music industry when it announced that Emagic would discontinue its Windows-based products in favor of Mac products exclusively.
