With Halloween right around the corner, some Mac users in the spirit of things might want to dress up their desktops with some seasonally appropriate iconography. The Iconfactory is happy to oblige with a new freeware icon set for Mac OS X called Macabre — the latest installment of what’s become an annual tradition at the Iconfactory.

Created by Gedeon Maheux, this year’s Halloween collection isn’t “the usual gang of movie monsters or cliché holiday trappings.” Instead, Maheux said that he’s tried to add “a definite creep factor” with each icon telling “a mini ghost story.”
“… I think I’m most proud of the Zuni Fetish icon. This one is based directly from a movie from the 70’s called Trilogy of Terror. Its about this nasty little tribal doll that comes to life and hunts and stalks Karen Black around her apartment. I saw it when I was at an impressionable age and I think I’ll just say that it scared the crap out of me,” said Maheux.
Other icons in the Macabre collection include a jack o’lantern, scary wood scene, one inspired by the mask from the movie Scream, a vampiress’ toothy maw, and more — ten all told. The icons are available in a standard set you can copy and paste yourself or an IconDropper pack if you prefer.
