If you have a newer iBook and you’d like to upgrade your optical drive to one that can watch DVD-ROMs and burn CD-RWs, you’re in luck: Mac upgrade and peripheral maker MCE Technologies LLC is now offering just such an upgrade.

The combo drive upgrade is available for all “dual USB” iBook models. MCE does the upgrade itself, which costs US$249 (including return shipping). They replace your iBook’s internal optical drive — CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or CD-RW, it doesn’t matter — with a new “Combo drive,” or one that can read DVDs and burn CD-RW discs as well.
MCE noted that the drive works in both 12.1 and 14.1-inch screen-equipped iBooks. The mechanism records CD-Rs at up to 8x speed, records CD-RWs at 8x speed, reads DVD-ROM discs at up to 8x speed and reads CD-ROMs at up to 24x. The drive is also bootable, works with Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, iTunes and Disc Burner and carries a 1 year warranty.
Customers interested in taking advantage of the deal must contact MCE and arrange to ship their iBook to MCE’s Irvine, Calif. facility. Certified MCE techs handle the upgrade and return the drive to you via 3-day return shipping. MCE estimates turnaround at 2-3 business days.
