Former NeXTStep developer Softmagic Inc. has released MLayout 1.2, a new version of its XML-based page layout program developed for Mac OS X and designed specifically for magazine publishing. The new version gains improvements for Jaguar and other enhancements as well.

MLayout 1.2 gains optimization of Mac OS X 10.2 and improves overall display speed, according to the developer. It now supports English, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. Japanese language support is also in beta. Screen fonts are supported for faster display, and transparency is now supported. MLayout 1.2 now features “WYSIWeb” support, and has a more stable Model and Master page as well.
MLayout is available with BookAssembler as a plug-in. BookAssembler does production planning, monitoring and imposition printing. More details are available from the Softmagic Web site, which also features demo downloads of both applications.
