Logitech Inc., the company that makes a variety of personal computer peripherals, has released the US$399 Z-680, which the company says is the first THX certified speaker system to simultaneously connect to and play from personal computers, video game consoles, DVD players and portable audio players.
The Z-680 comes equipped with Dolby Digital and DTS hardware decoding for 5.1 digital sound. Unfortunately, Dolby 5.1 digital sound isn’t supported on the Mac yet, but the Z-680 system otherwise works fine with Mac systems via a standard audio plug.
The Z-680 comes with an eight-inch, long throw subwoofer driver with a flared bass port for distortion-free bass, according Bob Wick, senior vice president and general manager of Logitech’s Audio Division. It sports digital optical and coaxial inputs, as well as six channel analog inputs. And the speaker system has a Digital SoundTouch Control Center with a wireless remote, for adjustment of the speaker controls from anywhere in a room.
