Riverdeep Inc. today announced the release of Zoombinis Island Odyssey, a new CD-ROM marketed under Riverdeep’s The Learning Co. brand. Aimed at kids eight and up, Zoombinis Island Odyssey has been developed to promote math skills and logical problem solving, as well as an understanding of science topics.

Players team up with the Zoombinis to restore their ecologically ravaged homeland and save the wild Zerbles. Kids must form and test hypotheses, decode complex processes, and are introduced to concepts in astronomy, mechanics, cryptography and life sciences along the way. Seven puzzles each have three levels of challenge.
The Zoombinis series — this is the third game in the line — differ from other educational titles by promoting kids’ ability to explore and invent solutions to problems rather than telling them what to do, according to the developers. As a result, the title helps to reenforce logical thinking skills, experimentation, and the organization of information.
Zoombinis Island Odyssey is available on hybrid CD-ROM with support for Windows and Mac OS (including Mac OS X). The game costs US$19.99. A special version for schools is coming soon. It adds a resource binder that contains lesson plans, additional activities and more, along with multiuser licensing options.
