The fourth chapter in this ongoing strategy game series features a confrontation between Emilia Nighthaven and the dread King Gavin Magnus and his horde of Dragon Golems. Over the course of six campaigns Emilia and Magnus must battle for control of the land of Axeoth. The game features more than 60 new creatures, five schools of magic, six different town types, and more than 180 artifacts.
Other features include an all-new game engine with dramatically improved graphics, a new interface, and support for multiple resolutions scaling from 800 x 600 to 1200 x 1080 pixels. A new skill system enables player characters to become more specialized as play progresses, and a new magic system features five different and highly specialized schools of magic: Order, Life, Nature, Chaos and Death.
In addition to the six multi-mission campaigns, Heroes of Might & Magic IV features dozens of standalone scenarios. A campaign editor lets players create their own missions, and features a mapmaker that supports terrain deformation. Players who tire of single-player missions can also take on all comers in online play over the Internet against up to six different players.
Heroes of Might & Magic IV was originally developed by New World Computing and published for the PC and Mac by The 3DO Company. Its Macintosh conversion was managed by Contraband Entertainment.
System requirements for Heroes of Might & Magic IV call for Mac OS 9 or better, or 10.1 or later; G3/350MHz or faster; 750MB hard disk space; 4x CD-ROM; and 28.8Kbps modem or better for online play. The game carries a suggested retail price of US$49.95. If you can’t find it at a store near you, you can also order it from 3DO’s own e-store.
