Sorenson Media has announced plans to release Sorenson Squeeze 3 for MPEG-4, a new version of its video compression technology. The new version of Sorenson Squeeze is coming to Mac OS and Windows in the first quarter of 2003. The software will be available alone or as part of the Sorenson Squeeze 3 Compression Suite.

The new version of Sorenson Squeeze is ISMA MPEG-4 specification-compliant, according to the developer, and features tools for MPEG-4 Visual Simple Profile and Visual Advanced Simple Profile to make sure that optimum quality is achieved for each application. Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is also supported — it’s a high-quality audio format that requires significantly less data than other formats.
Other features of Sorenson Squeeze 3 for MPEG-4 include support for one-pass and two-pass Variable Bit Rate (VBR) compression, batch processing through “watch” folders, video and audio filter adjustment, support for Digital Video (DV) capture, and adjustable cropping.
The software will be available as a standalone application, and it’ll also be bundled in the forthcoming Sorenson Squeeze 3 Compression Suite. Expect to see an estimated street price of about US$199 for the standalone version. Upgrading pricing from other Squeeze products is also available.
Sorenson’s forthcoming Sorenson Squeeze 3 Compression Suite bundles together Sorenson Squeeze 3 for MPEG-4 together with Sorenson Video 3 Pro and Sorenson Spark Pro, making it possible for users to process, encode, and deliver video for Web, CD, or other content formats. It works with Macromedia Flash MX, Adobe Premiere, Avid Xpress DV and Apple Final Cut Pro.
Expected to ship in the first quarter of 2003, Sorenson Squeeze 3 Compression Suite is expected to carry an estimated street price of about $449.
