Marathon Computer is now taking preorders for its new R’ears: rear mounting hardware for Apple Xserves to be installed in racks that are less than 29 inches deep.

“Xserve comes with provision for center-mounting, and with extendable rear ears to adjust for deeper racks, but until now there has been no support (and we mean that literally) for shallower racks,” said Marathon’s Michael Rowland. “If your rack is open in the rear, as many wiring closet installations are, now it can accommodate the Xserve.”
R’ears connect to the rear mounting hardware that’s included with the Xserves, adjusting inward to allow the Xserve to fit into a rack as little as 22 inches deep. Anchor points are also included to accommodate the Xserve’s cable management arm.
R’ears are made from steel with a clear zinc finish. They cost US$40 and will be available later this month.
