SMART is an acronym for “Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology,” and the toolkit uses technology that’s built into most modern ATA drives to help keep an eye on things. SMART Toolkit leverages that technology to monitor and alert you before data is lost, according to the developer. When SMART Toolkit detects a problem, you’re alerted with sound, e-mail, or an update to your personal Web server. SMART Toolkit requires Mac OS X 10.2 or higher and an IDE hard disk.
DriveTest measures the performance of hard drives with different data transfer sizes and four different types of test that can be compared across different computers. It also offers a verification test to analyze data integrity across the driver, drive controller, physical cabling, drive motherboard and operating system. In addition to working natively for Mac OS X, DriveTest also supports Mac OS 9. It also needs 16MB free RAM.
SMART Toolkit 1.0 is available for US$34.95. DriveTest 1.0 costs $19.95.
