UK-based game maker
has released their second Mac shareware title — an intriguing neo-retro arcade shooter called Mutant Storm. It’s the follow-up to last year’s release called “Space Tripper.”

Mutant Storm borrows from the classics but offers an updated twist, with OpenGL-rendered graphics, particle effects and hypnotic lighting. The developer said that Mutant Storm was inspired by classic arcade game hits like Robotron and Smash TV, as well as Llamatron. Pompom’s previous effort, Space Tripper, also offered retro-inspired gameplay similar to the arcade classic “Defender.”
In Mutant Storm, you must repel swarming hordes of enemies as you avoid their deadly attacks, using one set of controls for motion and another for firing weapons. The game features more than 89 levels, each one harder than the next. It features weapons powerups and multiplayer modes, too.
Mutant Storm costs US$20 to register. A nine level demo is available for download from the Web site. Mac system requirements call for a G3/400MHz or better, 30MB hard disk space, OpenGL video card, and Mac OS 9 or higher (it runs natively in OS X too). The Mac OS X version requires SDL — Simple DirectMedia Layer — to run. An installer is included with the game.
