Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is a first-person shooter that puts you in the role of John Mullins, a modern-day mercenary on a mission to stop terrorists from using biological weapons. Developed originally by Raven Software for the PC, Soldier of Fortune II was ported by The Omni Group and published recently by MacPlay.
The game uses Id Software’s Quake III Arena underpinnings for its core engine technology, and supports multiplayer capabilities. “PunkBuster” is an anti-cheating technology developed by Even Balance Inc. Employed by Quake III Arena and certain other Quake III-based games, PunkBuster support finally came to the Mac recently. This new public beta patch for Soldier of Fortune II likewise enables Soldier of Fortune II Mac players to once again play on PunkBuster-protected Soldier of Fortune II servers.
There’s more to this patch than just anti-cheating technology, however. Other changes include the addition of two new weapons — the SIG551 assault rifle and Silver Talon pistol, and four new maps. Numerous gameplay changes have been made, various bug fixes have been made and enhancements have been introduced for weapons, new console commands have been added, and more. Visit MacPlay’s Web site and register for the update — the ReadMe file included with the 1.0.2 public beta update contains the full details. The update measures about 20.5MB.
